Western States Agreement Changes:  Per the latest Western States Agreement - In order to be
dispatched a member MUST be drug tested, OSHA-10 trained and Respirator Fit.
January 2010
Happy New Year - I am encouraging all Local 92 members to start off the year with a bang; to be the best you
can be
!  Our Contractors are expecting good things from our members.  They are looking for the most qualified
people they can get, and we must live up to those expectations.  New contracts allow the contractor to request
the most qualified members on our out-of-work list.  You must maximize your skills; have a positive attitude toward
your craft.  Just as you have an expectation to be dispatched, the contractor has an expectation that they will
receive the most qualified people for their projects.

As I've stated in the past; this brotherhood is a two-way street, not only will your brotherhood take care of you but
you must take care of your brotherhood.  You cannot expect to sit back and reap the benefits that Local 92's
reputation provides, by riding on the backs of fellow, hard-working skilled Boilermaker craftsmen.  You must
protect the hard-won reputation of Local 92, if you expect to have work offered to our Local.  Some of you have
owned businesses; put yourself in the shoes of the contractor; would you want to pay the wages and benefits
that have been negotiated for Boilermakers if employees couldn't perform the work required?  Contractors will be
less likely to bid work in an area where they cannot rely on the available workforce.  It is your obligation to
perform the required work, as requested, at the highest level, without causing difficulties on the job.

Take advantage of the training offered to you by the Boilermakers.  Check our website for future training dates.
If you aspire to Foreman / General Foreman, or beyond, we have listed tips on our website's
Training Page, to
help you understand the qualifications required to attain those positions; make yourself marketable.  If you
expect your union to protect and support you, you must protect and support your union - your brothers.
John F. Kennedy's quote comes to mind, "Ask not what your country can do for you..."  Therefore, ask not what
your union can do for you, ask what you can do for your union.

CAF - Campaign Assistance Fund is the Boilermakers Political Action Committee (PAC).  With CAF donations,
the Boilermakers Union contributes financial assistance to campaigns of pro-worker candidates who will support
issues that will benefit out trade.  CAF money is used to make direct contributions to candidates for federal office.
Only voluntary donations from our members may be given to CAF.  CAF money cannot come from a Lodge's
treasury.  The Boilermaker's LEAP Executive Committee determines which candidates should receive CAF
assistance, based on advice and recommendations from the Boilermakers Government Affairs Department.
They consider many factors in this decision, including the candidate's voting record, published positions, need
for funds, chance of success, and whether LEAP has declared the race to be critical.  You must sign a consent
form if you wish to have just five cents per hour deducted from your Vacation Funds, on the first of December, of
each year.  Donations to CAF are an investment in your future.  Contact Local 92 to sign up.  It is essential, to
help you have a voice in political matters that will effect your future.

Tax Time - Many of your out-of-pocket expenses, as a Field Construction Boilermaker, are tax deductible; such
as union dues, safety equipment, tools, and work/travel expenses.  It is suggested that you keep a log book with
all job information, and a container for all receipts related to your work/travel expenses.  In your log book you
may want to include: the name of your employer (the contractor who paid you), their address, phone number, job
location, date of hire and lay-off, and any expenses incurred while on the job; those might include food and
lodging.  Along with your receipts, you should keep your payroll stubs for comparison with year-end, W-2 forms
that your employer should mail to you by the end of January.

Make your future successful and prosperous. Fraternally,
Eddie Marquez, Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer
